Synopsis

In The Young Man, Annie Ernaux resumes the relationship she had, at age 54, with a man thirty years younger. As is the case in several other Ernaux works, multiple themes converge in the narrative: memory, sexism, age gap and class , writing and the repetitive nature of time and desire.

In this novel, Annie Ernaux combines the sparseness of her words with the intensity of her narrative. Delving into her relationship with a student thirty years her junior, the text brings up themes dear to Ernaux's work, such as the very act of writing. At one point in her narrative, the author evokes the writing of another novel, which she would carry out later, dealing with the clandestine abortion she had years before: "Happening", also published in audiobook format by Supersônica. The release of "The Young Man, produced in partnership with Fósforo Editora, continues the publishing of works by the winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature in audiobook format.

Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 in Lillebonne, France. She studied at the University of Rouen and taught at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance for over thirty years. Her books are considered modern classics in France. In 2017, Ernaux was awarded the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her body of work and, in 2022, the Nobel Prize for Literature.
