Synopsis

‘My father tried to kill my mother one Sunday in June, in the early afternoon.’ From this event, which marked the end of her childhood, Annie Ernaux delves into her family’s history, searching for the origin of a feeling that accompanies her throughout her life and which lends its name to this novel. Devoid of sentimentality, the story in Shame interweaves the social and individual, in Ernaux’s characteristic style. In dealing with the social life of the inhabitants of Y., her hometown, the author focuses on the various forms of violence experienced in this dynamic, revealing what motivated her desire to write.

In yet another hard-hitting story, 2022 Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux masterfully dissects her family history, blending it with the social habits of her surroundings, the small post-war French town called Y. in the novel. As is common in Ernaux’s work, an individual story can contain many others: that of Y., her hometown, but also that of France and of part of Europe. By taking as its starting point an episode of domestic violence, narrated from the feeling of shame that followed it, and by scrutinizing the feeling of not belonging, arising from the chasm between different social classes, this work takes on a hybrid character, falling between autobiography and sociological reflection – which characterizes the author’s literary project and has sparked great interest in her work around the world.

She won the Shell Award for Best Actress for Rainha(s), duas atrizes em busca de um coração (2008), which she co-wrote with Georgette Fadel and Cibele Forjaz. She played Maria Bruaca in Rede Globo’s soap opera Pantanal (2022).
