Synopsis

In 1963, Annie Ernaux, a 23-year-old literature student, became pregnant by a young man with whom she had been involved with. She decided to terminate the pregnancy at a time when abortion was illegal in France, putting her in a position of profound isolation and helplessness. Forty years later, the author returns to her diaries and memories to write about this event.

With this book, we inaugurate the publication of Annie Ernaux’s works in audiobook format, in partnership with Fósforo Editora. The texts by the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022 were recorded by actress Isabel Teixeira. In "Happening", the author revisits her decisions, thoughts and emotions at the time, relying on the power of writing to turn something intimate into something collective, a characteristic trait of her works. Narrating is also a way of dealing with this event which has no form or name, because of the impact it had on her life and because of the silence that comes from criminalization, moral judgment, sexism, abuse and medical violence.

Isabel Teixeira (São Paulo, 1973) is an actress, playwright, researcher and director who graduated from the University of São Paulo’s School of Dramatic Art. She won the Shell Award for Best Actress for Rainha(s), duas atrizes em busca de um coração (2008), which she co-wrote with Georgette Fadel and Cibele Forjaz. She played Maria Bruaca in Rede Globo’s soap opera Pantanal (2022).

Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 in Lillebonne, France. She studied at the University of Rouen and taught at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance for over thirty years. Her books are considered modern classics in France. In 2017, Ernaux was awarded the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her body of work and, in 2022, the Nobel Prize for Literature.
